Hi everyone! You may have noticed that we've been a little MIA on the blog lately, and we apologize for that. Hannah and I have been doing our best to keep the Instagram active, but we are both juggling a lot of things in our professional and personal lives right now, and unfortunately that means the blog has been suffering as a result. We will try to add more new content soon, but please be patient with us!
I do have a few restaurant reviews to write up in the next few days, which I'm excited to share with you! Today, I wanted to write a post about Not Your Average Joe's, a restaurant that many of you may know. For those of you who don't know it, you're in for a real treat! Not Your Average Joe's is a small restaurant chain with locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia. It's known for its funky decor, fun drinks, and yummy food, and it also happens to set a gold standard for GF accommodations.
Not Your Average Joe's has a separate gluten free menu and also marks gluten free items on its regular menu. The options are extensive and include a nice range of appetizers, entrees, and even desserts. One of my favorite things about Not Your Average Joe's is that they bring out gluten free onion rolls at no extra charge. I think that out of all the restaurants I've been to since going gluten free, Not Your Average Joe's has the best gluten free dinner rolls. They're soft, warm perfection. Don't forget to ask for a separate dipping sauce if you're dining with non-GF folks!
I also sometimes like to get the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wrap appetizer, which come with oranges, carrots, peanuts, and orange-sesame vinaigrette. They are super light yet flavorful and a good size to split with a friend.
The entree options include lots of great choices like burgers, sandwiches, and pasta dishes. On one of my recent trips there, I tried Frutti Di Mare, which includes clams, mussels, shrimp, gluten free penne pasta, spinach, garlic, tomato, and a white wine clam broth. I did find the pasta to be slightly overcooked and mushy - always a peril of cooking GF pasta - but otherwise, it was phenomenal. All of the seafood was cooked to perfection, and I ended up being too full to finish.
Another recent selection was the gluten free burger, which came on one of their delicious buns and was cooked very nicely. Unfortunately, Not Your Average Joe's does not have a separate fryer, so fries are a no-go, but they're happy to substitute some yummy mashed potatoes instead.
Hannah tried a slightly healthier alternative: a chicken sandwich with a side of green beans. Similarly, it was served on one of their delicious rolls with a generous serving of green beans.
Don't forget to add a fun cocktail, like this seasonal Watermelon Sangria, which tasted just like summertime to me.
And there you have it! I'd recommend Not Your Average Joe's to anyone gluten free; it's such a great place to go with friends and family, and I never feel like I'm missing out when I eat there. They have great gluten free bread and pasta substitutes and really know what they're doing! It's such a relief to find places like this where I can dine out and not worry about a thing.
